To sum it all up, “I love you” is more for romance or something more serious or impactful. We use this when we have already established a relationship or a connection with someone, or when we are trying to take the next step with that person we have feelings for. These words are dripping with meaning, so you should feel all of those things! This is a big step.
But if you simply want to tell another person that you care about and appreciate them as a human being, then you can switch it up and use the chummy, “Love you.” It shows affection and care without freaking the other person out into thinking that you want to put a ring on it.
