My eldest son Ken meeting his Great-grandmother many moons ago, she would have celebrated her 100th birthday this year but unfortunately passed away. It's Ken's birthday. Happy Birthday! It is due to Ken and my other children that I do the work I do today. His Dutch nationality would have been at risk in two years time at age 28. It took quite a bit of attention and activism to get a small relief. In 2022 we got the Dutch nationality law changed and the so called 10-Year Clock became a 13-Year Clock. Thanks to so many others we got 3 extra years. So we now have a bit more time, for Ken another 5 years from today to get some real change and get the Clock and automated loss abolished all together. Let's be honest, unfortunately his Dutch nationality is now the only link between us and what could hopefully bring us back together one day. There is no justice where the state thinks it is OK to add another level of separation and distancing by separating family through stripping someone's nationality. Time for a real modern and liberal nationality law instead of the old fashioned feudal one we have today. The historic Clocks and current one explained here:https://lnkd.in/dG9VRFW

Hey government/public service peeps! Coming to you all with a point to make. We need to stop using the word "citizens" when referring to people living in your city, town, or municipality. As an immigrant myself, anytime I heard messaging with the word citizen in it... I did not think it applied to me. I felt excluded and marginalized even further. Citizenship was such a goal term to have but legally we were not citizens. Government messaging and rhetoric is already so challenging to grasp and make relatable but this is an easy way to make sure all people that 'reside' in your jurisdiction know it's for everyone. Residents is a better term to use in messaging and speech. Check out this neat article from webster dictionary. Hope this helps and let's make it catch on! https://lnkd.in/eiFu53qM

Statelessness is a human rights violation! Denis Neselovskyi our Statefree Legal Officer is currently attending the Pre-Sessions of the UN Universal Periodic Review in Geneva. In front of around 40 countries, he presented the most important recommendations on how to improve human rights of stateless people in Germany. His presentation was based on the joint report which we submitted to the Human Rights Council together with ENS and ISI.Our main recommendations: 1. Amend nationality laws to ensure that all otherwise stateless children born in Germany automatically acquire a nationality at birth, in particular by removing the ‘legal’ residence requirement.2. Remove all practical barriers to birth registration and ensure that the status of parents does not prevent immediate registration.👉 You can find the full report by the link in the comments.

This week’s post explores the concept of citizenship within the South African context, drawing upon the principle of Ubuntu. Through an analysis of the legal framework and current significant cases, the author highlights the disconnect between Constitutional ideals and their real-world application, especially concerning the acquisition of citizenship by non-citizens. In light of this, the author proposes a revaluation of citizenship through the lens of Ubuntu, advocating for more flexible and inclusive pathways to citizenship.https://lnkd.in/d_DsjZDS

The civic test is a good idea. On a volunteer basis, maybe also culture courses for other foreigners who take longer to get acquainted with the Taiwanese culture. Also a good opportunity to make friends and break the ice faster with the island's society. The oath is not a great idea if you ask me...there is no way on Earth you can achieve loyalty from a compulsory signature.___________________________________A Democratic Progressive Party legislator yesterday introduced a draft amendment that would require Chinese spouses to swear an oath of loyalty to Taiwan and take a test of civic knowledge before becoming citizens.Legislator Huang Jie (黃捷) proposed the changes amid controversy around a proposal to allow Chinese spouses to obtain citizenship after four years of marriage, down from six.Under the proposal, the oath of loyalty would be legally binding, with contravention of it resulting in the person losing their household registration.https://lnkd.in/gcmVwrGn

Did you know? when it comes to citizenship, if a child is born on an aircraft that child adopts the citizenship of the registered craft. meaning that if one gives birth while on their way to zambian from America, because their craft is American registered, the child automatically becomes the citizen of America. this is in accordance to article 35(5) of the zambian constitution. Now the question is what happens if one is born on waters and to what extent does one become a citizen? stay tuned Staysafe@counselNaka❤
